Considering a surprise wedding? While it might seem like an exciting and perhaps even easier option for your nuptials, there are still a lot of factors to consider before you commit. As a luxury wedding photographer, I’ve helped plan couples destination wedding, big weddings (120+ guests), micro weddings and elopements anywhere from a couple years ahead to as little as 3 weeks out.

First off, who should consider a surprise wedding?
It’s often quite good for people that would find the prolonged planning stressful and are happy to have a quick more laissez-faire approach to their special day. It’s much easier – no time for options or choices. You use what you have available, not worrying about flowers being flown in on time etc.

How does the planning stage differ to planning a regular wedding?
It’s the same planning just done quicker, sometimes with less options. I’ve helped couples plan within 3-5 months, I’ve helped within 8 weeks, 3 weeks, etc. The less time you give yourselves the less suppliers will be available! A lot of couples will choose to host an after party with a big guest list in a casual setting or a pre-wedding celebration, after wedding celebration, or spilt up their photos across multiple days so the day of the surprise itself can be just focused on mingling with their loved ones. Vendors were those that were available and what they could supply. With the couples best interest in mind and my connections with in the industry, it always turns into an amazing party!

What about the invitations to the event that is ultimately the wedding? What should they say?
Often people are invited to an engagement party which unfolds into a wedding. Invites would be to the engagement maintaining the informality of an engagement.

What are some common pitfalls or mistakes couples make that can endanger the surprise?
Leaking the plan to anybody! It works when it’s a best-kept secret. It’s also great for everyone when it is a secret so all get surprised.

What is the most creative way you’ve seen couple’s approach the surprise moment and reveal?
My last surprise, the celebrant arrived and made the announcement that this is no ordinary party that they have been invited too. We then rolled out a carpet, laid candles, set up the seating while the guests all watched. It was an incredible energy on the evening.
