What to Do When a Camera Is Pointed in Your Direction at a Wedding

Wondering how to look natural in wedding photos? Here are some tips for guests on how to feel comfortable when a camera is pointed at you during the celebration.

Attending a wedding can be an exciting experience, but if you’re not sure what to do when the camera points in your direction, it can sometimes feel a little awkward. As a wedding photographer, I’ve seen it all—guests freezing, posing in unnatural ways, or even looking uncomfortable. This is why I’m sharing a few simple tips to help you feel more at ease and look your best when the camera is on you!

1. Keep Doing What You’re Doing

My first tip is simple: just keep doing what you’re doing! Whether you’re in the middle of a conversation, getting up to grab some food, or simply enjoying the moment, don’t feel pressured to pause or freeze. Candid shots are often the most beautiful and natural—showing you engaged and relaxed. I’d much rather capture a real moment than one where you’re unsure about what to do with your hands or how to pose.

2. Confidence in Your Movements

If you’re feeling a little self-conscious, don’t worry! Here’s a simple trick: pull your shoulders back and offer a soft, natural smile. These subtle actions can make a world of difference and will help you look poised without interrupting the moment.

3. Strike a Pose (If You’re Feeling It)

For those of you who love the camera and feel confident striking a pose—go for it! I absolutely love incorporating posed shots into a wedding album, as they can add that extra flair and elegance. Whether it’s a simple pose or something more creative, it’s all about showcasing your unique personality.

4. Turn Away If You’re Not Into Photos

If posing or being in the spotlight isn’t your thing, that’s completely fine too! If you’re feeling camera-shy, you can always turn away from the camera. I promise, this won’t offend me in the least, and it allows you to stay in the moment without any added pressure.

5. Avoid Staring Directly into the Camera Without Expression

One thing I’d encourage all wedding guests to avoid is staring directly into the camera without any facial expression. While they can sometimes make for funny pictures, they often result in awkward or stiff images. A little engagement with the moment and a relaxed look is always much more flattering!

Ultimately, my goal as a wedding photographer is to capture real moments that reflect the joy, emotion, and beauty of the day. So, don’t stress about what to do when the camera is on you—just enjoy yourself, be yourself, and the photos will follow naturally.
