Skip the Stiff Poses: A More Meaningful Way to Document Your Family on Your Wedding Day

Ditch the awkward poses—here’s how to capture your family in a genuine, meaningful way right after your ceremony.

As a wedding photographer, one of the most common things I hear is: “We want photos with our family, but we don’t want them to feel posed or awkward.”

If that’s you, here’s a little secret to getting beautiful, meaningful photos of your loved ones—without the traditional lineup of stiff, staged portraits.

For reference, this is how formal family portraits post ceremony will typically look. Everyone in a straight line, smiling at the camera. Nothing wrong with it, but if this isn’t your vibe then keep reading..

Typically, family photos happen right after the ceremony. But if the idea of standing in a line and smiling on cue isn’t your vibe, here’s a fresh approach:

Plan a Private, Intentional Family Moment

Before the big day, send a quick text or even a cute, official invite to just your immediate family—parents, siblings, maybe grandparents. Let them know that immediately after the ceremony, you and your new spouse will be heading to a designated space (like the bridal suite or a quiet garden area) for a few minutes of private celebration.

Invite them to join you there for a glass of champagne, some hugs, happy tears, and intimate moments together before you all head to cocktail hour.

Why This Works

This 15-minute window gives you a break from the whirlwind of the day and creates a space to soak in the “just married” magic with the people who raised you, loved you, and supported your journey. And because it’s relaxed and unscripted, your photographer (hi, that’s me!) will be there capturing all of it—organic moments, real smiles, emotional hugs, and everything in between in a private space.

Not everyone is an extrovert and for some people (my husband included) trying to get relaxed around hundreds of people won’t happen, trust me. So having a private space even for a short time allows these moments to happen (bonus provides relief from the heat/rain if needed too – this is especially helpful for the elderly)

No awkward posing. Just love, connection, and beautiful memories you’ll cherish forever.
