How to Be the Best Wedding Guest: Tips from a Professional Wedding Photographer

Learn the best wedding guest etiquette from a professional photographer to ensure you make a lasting impression and help the day run smoothly.

Attending a wedding, whether it’s your first time or you’re a seasoned guest, can be a bit daunting. As a wedding photographer, I’ve seen it all – from the perfect guests who know just what to do to those who may need a little guidance. To help you be the best wedding guest possible, I’ve put together a few simple tips that will not only ensure you’re a considerate attendee but also make the day run smoothly for everyone involved.

1. Arrive 15 to 30 Minutes Early

One of the biggest mistakes guests make is arriving too early or too late. If you arrive too early, there’s a chance you’ll run into the couple or the bridal party, which can be distracting. Plus, you’ll spoil the surprise of seeing the couple walk down the aisle. On the flip side, arriving too late can make it difficult to find a seat, and you might end up walking in right as the ceremony starts. Aim to arrive about 15 to 30 minutes early, giving you plenty of time to settle in without causing a disruption.

2. Sit Towards the Front

As a photographer, I can’t stress enough how much it helps when guests sit closer to the front or in aisle seats. There’s a tendency for people to sit far back, thinking it’s a more comfortable spot, but this can make the wedding look less full in photos. Filling those seats in the front adds to the energy and makes the ceremony feel more intimate and celebratory for the couple.

3. Dress According to the Invitation

Pay attention to the dress code on the invitation. The couple has spent a lot of time making their event perfect, and dressing according to their wishes shows respect for their choices. If you’re unsure about what to wear, don’t hesitate to ask them – they’d rather you check than worry about your outfit last minute. That said, have fun with your outfit! Weddings are a great opportunity to look your best and feel confident.

4. Respect the Couple’s Time

It’s easy to want to take up a lot of the couple’s time, especially when you’re happy for them. However, remember that they have a lot of people to meet and greet. Make sure not to hog their time, especially when they’re trying to enjoy their reception or dance. A quick hug, congratulations, and a smile will go a long way.

5. Be Aware of the Photographer

When you see a camera pointed your way, don’t freeze up! Either continue doing what you’re doing naturally or, if you feel uncomfortable, simply turn away. As a photographer, I’m often trying to capture candid moments. All I want is to document those authentic, beautiful exchanges between guests. So relax, enjoy the moment, and just be yourself.

6. No Drugs, Ever

This may seem obvious, but I’ve witnessed some shocking situations where guests let drugs ruin the celebration. Not only does it disrespect the couple, but it also creates a chaotic atmosphere. Please, refrain from using drugs, and be the kind of guest who helps keep the event enjoyable and safe for everyone.

Being a great wedding guest is simple when you follow these thoughtful tips. By respecting the couple’s wishes and the photographer’s role, you’ll help create a joyful atmosphere and memorable images.
