As an elopement photographer, I’ve had the privilege of capturing the magic of intimate weddings and elopements. But, I know that announcing your decision to elope can be a daunting task. How do you break the news to your loved ones without hurting their feelings?
Firstly, it’s essential to remember that your wedding day is a celebration of your love and commitment to each other. It’s okay to prioritise your own desires and needs over the expectations of others.
Be Honest and Have the Conversation in Person
While it might not be possible to have the conversation with every single member of your social circle, I believe it’s crucial to announce your decision to elope in person. This will allow you to read their emotional reactions and reassure them that your decision wasn’t made out of spite or disrespect.
Break It Down and Share Your “Why”
It’s essential to explain why you’ve decided to elope. Share your reasons with your loved ones, whether it’s because you want an intimate celebration, a destination wedding, or simply a day that feels true to your relationship. Be transparent and honest about your intentions.
Involve Your Loved Ones in the Planning Process
Don’t make your loved ones feel left out by excluding them from the planning process. Ask for their input and advice on various aspects of your wedding day, such as dress shopping, floral choices, or writing a heartfelt letter for you to read on your elopement day.
Plan a Separate Celebration
If you’re worried about not celebrating with your loved ones on your wedding day, consider planning a separate party before or after your elopement. This can be a wonderful opportunity to share your elopement photographs (and videos) with those closest to you.
Remember, It’s Okay to Put Yourself First
Your elopement day is yours, and it’s okay to prioritise your own desires and needs. Don’t let others’ opinions dictate your decision. Stay true to yourself and your relationship, and the rest will fall into place. Repeat it with me, “It is okay that we put ourselves first and if our family and friends love us they will respect our decision.” It’s normal to feel “selfish” or guilty but truly you don’t need to as you start this new chapter of your lives together. Doesn’t mean you don’t love your family and friends, it just means you want to prioritise your own experience and special day before catering for guests.
Communication is Key
Above all, communication is key. Be open and honest with your loved ones, and they’ll understand and respect your decision. Remember, this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and you should celebrate it in a way that feels authentic to you and your partner.
By following these tips, you can confidently share your decision to elope with your loved ones and enjoy the adventure of a lifetime, and if you’re looking for an elopement photographer who will go above and beyond for you two – then let’s chat and start bringing to life the day you two always hoped it would be.
