If you’re picturing a wedding that feels like a long weekend in the Italian countryside, without the twenty-four hour flight, Redleaf Wollombi is very likely the venue you’ve already fallen in love with on Instagram. As a luxury wedding photographer who has shot here and lived in Wollombi myself, I want to give you the real, detailed rundown of this estate, not just the highlight reel, so you can plan with confidence and start picturing your own day here.
Why Redleaf Wollombi Is Different From a Typical Hunter Valley Venue
Most Hunter Valley wedding venues are wineries with a function room attached. Redleaf is something else entirely: a 100-acre private estate, with 10 acres of manicured European-style gardens, built around a peach-washed Italianate villa. Towering pines and climbing roses frame the house, and the whole property was deliberately designed to feel like a centuries-old European country estate, even though it sits in distinctly Australian bushland just 3km from the historic 1800s township of Wollombi and a short drive from the heart of Hunter Valley wine country.
For couples, that combination is the real drawcard. You get the Tuscan villa aesthetic for your photos and styling, the convenience of being in driving distance for most Sydney and Hunter Valley guests, and a genuine sense of escape for the whole weekend rather than just a few hours.
The Venue Itself
The villa anchors the property, and because it has two separate wings, both partners can get ready on-site at the same time without running into each other before the ceremony, which is a small but lovely logistical win on the morning of. Inside, you’ll find a library, a billiards room, a main lounge with a large wood fireplace, and a classic swimming pool, all of which double beautifully as photo backdrops and as genuinely useable spaces across your stay.
Where to Say “I Do”: Ceremony Locations
Redleaf gives you three distinct backdrops for your vows:
- Directly in front of the sweeping peach villa facade, with that European country house framing behind you
- Beside the lavender garden, which is heavily scented and gorgeous in person, not just in photos
- Down by the edge of the private, man-made lake, for a softer, more reflective setting
Each of these reads completely differently in photographs, so it’s worth visiting at the time of year and time of day you’re getting married to see how the light falls.
Reception Spaces: Intimate to Grand
Redleaf scales well, which is part of why it suits such a range of guest counts.
The Garden Room is a permanent, fully repurposed indoor building (it used to be a restaurant), surrounded by its own private courtyard. It comfortably holds 24 to 60 guests seated, or up to 50 for a cocktail-style reception, and it has a fully functioning commercial kitchen attached. This is also a fantastic option as a wet-weather backup or as the venue for a more intimate welcome dinner the night before the wedding.
The Front Lawn is where things get grand. For larger celebrations, the expansive lawn can host a clear-span or sperry marquee for up to 200 guests, giving you the full estate-wedding feel with room for a big guest list.
The Stay: More Than Just a Wedding Day
This is where Redleaf really sets itself apart from a standard venue hire, and it’s worth understanding properly before you book.
The house itself sleeps up to 12 guests across 6 king-sized bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms, all luxuriously appointed with pillow-top mattresses, down pillows, duvets, plush towels and toiletries. The interiors lean French Provincial with rustic and exotic touches, curated from the owners’ own collection, so the house feels lived-in and personal rather than like generic event accommodation. Beyond the bedrooms, you’ve got a fully equipped chef’s kitchen (90cm oven, gas cooktop, two fridges, Nespresso machine, the works), a TV room, a dining room, free wifi, a Sonos sound system, board games, a gas BBQ and a herb garden. It’s set up as a genuine home, not a wedding factory.
A standard weekend wedding hire includes exclusive use of the entire property for a 3-night stay (sometimes 2 nights for winter or mid-week bookings). In practice, this means your wedding isn’t a six-hour event squeezed into a single day. It’s a three-day private getaway where your immediate family or bridal party can stay together under one roof, with a proper recovery day by the pool the morning after.
Catering: The Detail Most Guides Leave Out
Redleaf is a dry-hire, blank-canvas venue, which means you’ll bring in your own food and beverage team rather than choosing from an in-house list. The upside is significant: the commercial kitchen attached to the Garden Room dramatically cuts down on catering equipment hire costs compared to a typical marquee setup, and it means your food can be cooked fresh and served hot on-site, rather than reheated after being transported in.
Given the property’s Italian-villa styling, a lot of couples lean into that with their catering. Live pasta-making stations, a tiramisu station assembled in front of guests, or a custom Aperol Spritz bar all suit the setting naturally and photograph beautifully.
Who You’ll Be Working With
Booking Redleaf gets you an on-site property manager who handles the practical side of things, like power, basic maintenance and site access, on the day. You also have direct access to the venue’s owner, Matthew Low, who is the main point of contact for enquiries and site inspections at info@redleafwollombi.com.au. Even though it’s a DIY-style, dry-hire property, you’re not left to manage everything alone on the day.

Redleaf doesn’t publish set wedding packages publicly, and pricing depends on guest numbers, season, and what you’re bringing in for catering and styling, so the most accurate way to get current figures is to contact Matthew directly for a quote tailored to your date and guest list.
Tips From an Editorial and Documentary Wedding Photographer (Me!)
A few things I’d genuinely tell every couple booking Redleaf:
- Think about the season for your colour palette. The Hunter Valley can get properly cold from May through August. If you want warm, rich red and gold tones in the garden, an April–May wedding leans into that beautifully. If you’d rather have lush green everywhere, a summer date is the move.
- Use the villa and gardens as a genuine palette, not just a backdrop. The peach tones of the house, the greenery, and the lavender all give your photographer a lot to play with across the day, so don’t feel locked into one location for everything.
- Set your reception tables in front of the villa with festoon lights strung above. It’s a simple styling choice that does a lot of work for that European-evening feel once the sun goes down.
- Consider live music that suits the setting. A violinist or harpist during the ceremony or cocktail hour fits the atmosphere far better than a generic playlist.
- Build in real downtime. Whether it’s ten quiet minutes together right after the ceremony or a proper break before reception, the three-day stay gives you room to actually enjoy the day instead of just running through it.
- A vintage car for the bride’s arrival, or a helicopter for a dramatic entrance, both suit the grandeur of the estate if that’s the kind of statement you’re after.
- Save your first or last dance for under the festoon lights. It’s one of the most consistently beautiful frames I get from weddings here.
