A Brief History of Terrara House

In 1836, French tea trader Prosper De Mestre received a 1,300-acre land grant on the Shoalhaven River and named the property “Terrara.” His son, Etienne De Mestre, became a legendary horse trainer — his horse Archer won the inaugural Melbourne Cup in 1861, and went on to repeat the win. De Mestre-trained horses would go on to win the Cup three more times.
In 1886, the estate passed to Hugh Mackenzie, who built the mansion that still stands today, constructed between 1900 and 1904 from sandstone quarried upstream and floated down the river by barge. The architect Otto Beck designed the 23-room house, drawing inspiration from Mackenzie’s memories of his ancestral home in Scotland. Local oyster shells went into the mortar, cedar from the district panels the interiors, and the wrought iron on the verandahs was cast in Wollongong — details that still photograph beautifully today.
From 1926 the estate became a working dairy farm under the Hyam family, and since 2018 it has been under new private ownership with a singular vision: turn this grand Estate into a venue people could fully open their doors to and enjoy. The new owners brought in designer and photographer Ingrid Weir to lovingly restyle the mansion’s kitchen, conservatory, chapel, and accommodation, and to lead the conversion of an old shed into the now-famous “Chesters” venue, named for the Estate’s Melbourne Cup-winning history.
That layered history — colonial grandeur, racing legend, working farm, and now a designer-led wedding destination — is exactly what gives Terrara House its photographic richness. Every wall, verandah, and garden corner has a story behind it.
